Searching for Strangers

Service Overview

On Sunday, January 12, 2025, the First Presbyterian Church celebrated the season of Epiphany, focusing on themes of searching, guidance, and God’s manifestation in our lives. The service was led by Rev. Dr. Craig Alwin, with the sermon titled “Searching Strangers.” Drawing from Matthew 2:1-12 and Psalm 72:1-7, 10-14, the sermon reflected on the journey of the Magi as they followed the star to Jesus, exploring their significance in Matthew’s Gospel as seekers of divine presence. The message prompted the congregation to reflect on their own spiritual journeys, asking, “What are we searching for today, and what guides us?”

A highlight of the service was the introduction of the Star Words tradition, a contemplative practice where attendees selected a star inscribed with a word to reflect on throughout the year. This practice encourages mindfulness of God’s presence in daily life.

Musical elements enriched the worship experience, including the prelude arrangements of “On Jordan’s Bank the Baptist’s Cry” and “What Star is This, with Beams so Bright,” performed by Kris B., along with congregational hymns such as “We Three Kings of Orient Are” and “As with Gladness Men of Old.” The offertory music and postlude continued the Epiphany theme, beautifully arranged to complement the service’s reflective nature.

The children’s moment, led by Jennifer Zander, offered younger attendees an engaging introduction to the story of the Magi. Liturgist Carol W., along with cantors Linda D. and Jonathan P., guided the congregation through responses, while Debbie C. and John N. ensured seamless audio and visual support.

The worship emphasized the mystery and promise of Epiphany, inviting all to embrace the light of Christ and seek His presence in the ordinary moments of life.
